United Hospice of the Piedmont
Valerie Thompson, Administrator
118 York St.
Chester, SC 29706
385-2002

Hospice Care provides compassion, dignity. Most people would like to spend their last days at home, free of pain, and surrounded by family and friends, and Chester County is fortunate to have a number of providers. Local professionals provide a supportive and understanding network of caring individuals that are experts in providing palliative care. Hospice is not a place, but a concept of care. Services may be provided in the home. Many patients served by hospice continue to lead productive and rewarding lives. Hospice may also be provided in a nursing facility or residential care center. Although most patients admitted to hospice have conditions related to cancer, other diagnoses include Alzheimer’s, ALS, lung, kidney, renal, heart and liver diseases, as well as a failure to thrive. There is no out-of-pocket expense to the patient or family. Hospice is covered by Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance. No one is denied service because of an inability to pay, say local Hospice representatives. Services may vary from provider to provider but may include:

  • 24 hours of referral, if criteria is met. Registered nurses coordinate the care for every patient, perform comprehensive assessments and provide direct patient care. Patient and family education is an important part of every visit.
  • Nursing staff are on call and available 24 hours a day all week and will respond to your call within 15 minutes.
  • Family support services.
  • Home health aids to provide assistance with daily activities of living.
  • Bereavement counseling for the family 13 months after the loss of a loved one.
  • Medications and specialized durable medical equipment related to diagnosis.
